I found my pet rock for free in my backyard. I love my pet rock. I carry him around all over the yard and play games with him like hide and seek and chase and i put my front paws on him and push him all around the yard so he can get his exercise. i just don't understand why they won't let me bring him in the house! they say he's an outside rock, but that doesn't make sense. a rock is a rock inside or out!

Another year has gone by. I am a whole five years old! Can you believe it? The Sis bought me some pressies. I love to play with Daddy's basketball, but it is a little bit for me, so Sis brought me a my-size-basketball. Also, it's green, which is my second favorite color. The next time Sis came, I brought her that toy first thing to play with, and we took it outside and got it all muddy! Akira was being a stick in the mud and wouldn't play outside. But the Sis and me did. First we played with the green basketball, and then with my favorite rock. Then I worked on my holes. I got so dirty Sis washed my paws in the sink. I did NOT like that. I hate to have my paws touched let alone washed. Oh i also got some yummies for my birthday. I had to share with Akira though, and I don't think that's fair. He really liked them too, so he thinks he SHOULD get to share! Anyways, the treats are alaska salmon and potatoes. yum!
Sis took lots of pictures, but they are still on the Moms camera, so they're not up yet :(

I always knew I liked going to the park. Since Dad retired, I get to go everyday, and since Mom ws off work for the summer we've all been going a lot. Reasons I like going to the park:
1. you get to ride in the car

4. there are more squirrels and chipmunks at the park
5. lots of trees
6. you get to ride in the car again

As it turns out, I like going to the park too! I still HATE riding in the car, but once I get there it is grreat! I get to run all around and meet kids and other dogs, I get to pee over top of everythin Akira pees on, and my Daddy lifts me up to drink out of the human water fountain! It's grreat! The car ride back home is never as bad, and when we get home I get to take a nice little nap.

Our Sis is in Bulgaria (without us....grrr), but she was kind enough to pass along these pictures of a statue in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. This statue was a gift from the Japanese city of Okayama in brotherhood with the city of Plovdiv. The statue features a Japanese human, a crane, a monkey, and... A SHIBA INU! YES! Even in Bulgaria we are recognized for our regal statuesque bearing and authority. In other news, our Sis also saw a ceramic Shiba holding a lantern in it's mouth for sale in Nessebar, Bulgaria. Good to hear we have such International pull. One day, when Shibas take over the world, this will surely come in handy. Arooo!

After fighting over the wubba, squeaking the wubba what the sis called insectantly (we didn't think it sounded much like a bug), we managed to chew a whole through the wubbas protective layer to reveal his inner core. This all happened in less than eight minutes. Then for some reason the Sis took it off of us. Something about eating the string fraying from the gaping whole and a strange worry about choking on the squeaker. Bah. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted!

New Picture and Update

Our Sister has been very lax in making sure that our blog posts get to you, our bloggy friends. Please forgive her business and forgetfulness. She also keeps getting sick. I think she should see our Vet. He seems to fix what's wrong with us pretty quickly. Anyways, it has been pretty much of the same old. The family brought up an old loveseat from downstairs for us to use as a bed. We do pretty well in sharing it. Yesterday we went to the park. Sometimes we get to play tug of war with the rag toy. When Sis is home, she brushes our teeth and gives us extra treats, and puts us on her knee to look out the windows and keep watch. I met a pretty little border collie Suzie. Today, Dad is taking me to the park without Shiro today.

We were introduced to a webpage called www.lolcats.com Notice the second word of the domain name...cats....yes we were reluctant for this reason, but we were assured it would be worth it. So we went, and as much as we still want to chase and eat cats, we still must admit these photos with captions were pretty humorous and clever. So we started thinking we might have some photos suitable for such play. And so it is that we announce the First Annual LOL Akira and Shiro Caption Contest. Here are the rules: There are three pictures of each of us. A semi- finalist will be chosen from the best caption for each picture, and then the three semi-finalists for each of us will go head to head to have one Akira-pic Grandprize Winner and one Shiro-pic Grandprize winner. The judges will be us, the Sis, ad a panel made up of our friends Crys and Mark, who are PCC certified--that's puppy cuteness certification-- and the winners will receive a copy of the picture with their winning caption, perhaps pawtographed by ourselves. Well Shiro hates having his paws touched, so the ink thing might be difficult for him, but at least a nose print. Mom says he's good at making dirty nose prints on the windows! Well, we risked life and limb to get these photos for you, but here they are. The goat first got up on his goat house to see us better as we approached. Then he tried to charge us, but luckily his rope held. I growled and warned him to BACK UP! Doesn't he look scary? Other than the close encounter with the goat, it was a great walk Sis took me all over the place and one time she said "Akira, I don't even know where we are? What road issss this?" but I knew where we were. She was worried about the rain letting loose, but I don't mind getting wet. She also ran with me a bit cause sometimes I just need to run. Luv,

Our Weekend in Three Parts

Well, as you know The Sis was home this weekend, which was pawsome, as always, until she had to leave which we weren't too happy about. bah. So we're writing this in three parts, this part we will write together, then shiro has a part on the Shirohole and akira has a part on the evil horned goat.

Part I

We had lots of fun with Sis. She brought us a soccer ball home and spoiled us with more treats than we usually get and took us to her bedroom to play and carried us to look out the windows we can't reach and played with us and slept down on the couches with us some and cuddled and kissed us and took lots of pictures. well, the rest was good anyways. She can't get the pictures from the digi camera to us until she finds her usb cord (doh!) but we'll be posting the ones she took on her cell phone.

Here she caught us in action baring our teeth. Aren't we fierce? Look at our fangs!

Then we kissed and made up. We were really just playing...mostly.

Is This a Shiro-Hole?

Whenever I am on walks with the Sis, I am a great explorer and like to poke my head in any and every whole to see what's going on. Holes in trees, holes in drains, holes in the road, holes in a fence, holes in the dirt, any hole. And the Sis always says, "That's not a Shiro hole!" or "You're going to get your nose bit by a groundhog" or some such nonsense. Well, I have yet to see this in person, but the Sis assures me this is in fact a Shiro-hole. I will try it out tomorrow. It looks kinda tiny, but I think I can do it.

Breed Feature of the Week: Irish Wolfhound

The Irish Wolfhound is an ancient breed of dog originall bred for hunting wolf, hence the name. They are the tallest dog breed in the world. They have been said to be the equal of a lion in the past, but are gentle in nature towards humans. Their motto is "Gentle when stroked, fierce when provoked." This particular Irish Wolfhound is Liam, who lives in Pittsburgh. Liam is a mellow dog who loves to go on ambling walks and greet all his friends every day.

Attack of the Killer Goat!

So here's what happened. I was trying to do my business in an unoccupied field. The goat that lives with a hound dog and a duck outside the house next to the field kept getting closer. I kept trying to do my business. Then it came charging at me and the Dad. Surely it's chain would stop it. But it wasn't tied up! It headbutted me in my head! Luckily, not with the horns, but just with the head. Then the Dad had to wrestly with it. It headbutted him in the legs. So we both had to fight him and then call for back up from neighbor Jay to help send the goat home to his hound dog and duck. I was so out of breath after that, and all worked up, but I still finished my walk and found somewhere else to do my business. Sheesh. This is not a picture of the ACTUAL goat, because that would be too dangerous to get a picture right now, maybe when things have cooled off a bit between us. But this is basically what he looks like. Only bigger and meaner.

I have a big smile cause I'm doing my favorite thing in the whole entire world, which is going on a loooooong walk with Sis, and then stopping to rest WHEREVER i want to while she sits beside me and rubs my belly until I'm ready to go again. Some people say dogs can't smile. I really have no idea where they get that idea. Well, you know some people. I know some people who don't smile. I smile more than a lot of people, I think. Because I try to enjoy the little things in life, like stopping to smell the flowers and pee on the mailboxes.

Shiro says:
I am doing my favorite thing in the whole world, too, which is to sit on Sis's knee and look outside the high window and survey my domain. I like to keep my eyes on things, just in case the house should need protected you know. I never am not alert. I sleep very lightly just in case I should need to jump up quick like and fend off evil-doers. You never know. Those cats and deer sometimes get a little too close for their own good, and I have to tell them what's what. Akira likes to look out the window on Sis's lap too, and sometimes he takes a turn after me. He doesn't realize he's a lot heavier than I am. I think he thinks I am the bigger dog, because I am so fierce and scary that it outweighs my smaller stature.

these guys are asking for a place to call home. Scott rescued 6 black lab (mix)
puppies out of the middle of the road on Saturday. PLEASE help me find them
homes - otherwise, it's Animal Control - which means they only have 5 days.
We've bathed them, sprayed them for fleas and wormed them....but we can't keep
them. They are currently in a kennel in my basement since I don't have a fence.
I've lost count of the number of rescue groups that I've contacted, only to be
turned down due to no room. Please check with every dog person you know to see
if they need a puppy."

I am writing to apologize for myself and keeping the boys away recently. I was out of the country for a couple of weeks in Trinidad and Tobago, and they were unable to get the Brother off the computer long enough to blog while I was gone. As an offering to make up for their forced absence, I am posting two pics of me with some puppies on Lopinot Plantation in Trinidad. All of the dogs sort of flocked to me there and followed me around everywhere. I hope the boys aren't too jealous, but thought you all might like to see the pics.

We are sorry we haven't been on, but it's been out of our control. Our Sis had to go to the emergency room twice because she was passing and out stuff. So this was worse than normal and we couldn't even take shifts taking care of her. We both had to be there 24-7. Don't worry she's a lot better lately, and now she went back to her apt, so we have a minute. We need to rest after all that looking after our Sis, though! I mean, we slept on her, we let her hold us, we brought her balls and bones. It was a very strenuous job, but we were glad to be able to do it.

Way back when I was a tiny puppy, my favorite place to hang out was under the couch. Now, I can still get under there if I breath in real deep and shove myself in, and I do when the Cuz gets lost under there or something, but back when I was smaller, I used to just chill under the couch. It was shady, there were cool things hanging down to play with, I could pull out stuffing if I got bored, I could make a quick getaway from Akira when we were wrestling, ah those were the days. Oooh this is hard. Can we have 7 between us, or do we have to have 7 each? Well, we'll see how far we get first:

Shiro: I love potato chips. I mean, love. I know I'm not supposed to have them, but when Dad comes home for lunch, I wait for him to finish eating his soup, then I go to the pantry and wait and hope and wait and hope for him to open it and get out a bag of Lay's potato chips and hope and wait and hope and wait for him to drop one.

Akira: I once bit my Mom, but it was only because Shiro was screeching when she tried to put on his collar or something and I thought she was hurting him and I got scared and tried to protect him. I bit her in the butt. She forgave me.

Shiro: I still try to suck on Sis's clothes (especially her pajamas) She has a Shiro-mouth-sized-hole where I nibbled in her night shirt. She says I am oral retentive or something. She says I was not nursed long enough.

Akira: The whole car ride home from getting Shiro, I looked out the window and NOT at Shiro. It turns out he's not awful, though. He is fun to play with sometimes, and I am a good example for him and a good big brother.

Shiro: The whole car ride home from getting me, I sat on Sis's lap after I kept crying in the crate. I was perfectly content in Sis's lap, though.

Akira: I love carrots. Are dogs supposed to like veggies? I like most veggies, but NOT GREEN PEPPERS!

Shiro: My dog-mom was a red shiba, and my dog-dad was a black shiba. And I'm just a mixed up cream-colored pup!

Akira: I don't like it when things are out of place. I hate Halloween and Christmas because there are lots of decorations outside that SHOULDN'T be there.

Shiro: I HATE to be touched around my neck. I HATE wearing a collar. I HATE to put it back on after a bath. I WILL NOT TOLERATE a bandanna around my neck. Don't even try to put on one of those collars they give you after surgeries. You will regret it.

Akira: I do not like thunderstorms. I jammed myself under the couch in a thunderstorm. Even I am not sure how I did it. I just held my breath. Then I got stuck. Shiro whined for the parents, and Mom had to lift the couch in the air for me to scoot out. They put my crate back in the room after that, and I go there when I'm scared, tired, or just want to "get away" from it all.

Shiro: I don't mind thunderstorms, but I am not so fond of fireworks.

Akira: I had to drop out of Intermediate Obedience Training because I had some weird fur skin fungus and didn't want the other dogs to catch it. When I was there, however, the trainer said that I was the most well behaved Shiba Inu she had EVER seen. Ever. And she's seen a lot. That's ever. I am still weighing the Canine Good Citizen training.

Shiro: Do not touch me while I am asleep. Or when I am about to fall asleep. Or when I am just waking up. You are risking your fingers.

Akira: I hate bugs. Especially bees, but I will run from any flying nagging buzzing insect. They try to get up my butt and I have a tail that sticks up and curls on my back, so there is nothing back there to protect it! Sometimes I will just sit hard on the ground so there is no access.

We had a mostly good weekend (Except for the B-A-T-H). Sis was there from Saturday evening until Monday late afternoon. But, besides the bath (to add insult to injury) Sis says we must be part cat because we hate the water and dug our claws into her arms hanging on for dear life the whole time we were in the tub. Well. We are not cats, but we still aren't too fond of shampoo. Sis took some pictures of us clean and a little wet still after our bath.

Akira's Thoughts on the Matter

I was browsing some of our pals bloggys, and had some thoughts on these subjects as well.

First: Girl Girl has a lovely stuffed dog. It brought back fond memories for me of my favorite Booda Dog pal as a 4 month old puppy. The Booda Dog had a tragic wrestling accident. He just couldn't hold in his stuffing.

Next: Simba mentioned that some dogs like to sleep on their backs with their tummies skywards. Shiro hardly ever does this. He generally sleeps in a tightly curled ball and opens his eyes every 2 minutes to check his surroundings and jumps up every 5 minutes to patrol. I, however, am a champion sleeper, and love to relax and stretch out on my back.

Thirdly: Joey and Tanner's Mom must have a psychic connection with our Sis (Maybe it's the Pittsburgh thing), cause she found the Fufu Berry Soda too. Maybe they were meant to find it to make us smile remembering our buddy.

In Memory of Fu Fu

It is with heavy hearts we type this post. Our dear friend Fu Fu, the hamsterrier/hamsterdor retriever/teddy bear hamster has gone on to Rainbow Bridge on May 12th. We will miss Fu Fu greatly, but his legacy will live on. Who can forget the fun rides in the Fu Fu Mobile? Who can forget fun times with Sunny? Fu Fu was such an ingenious, playful, creative hamster, and we'll miss his blog entries, but hopefully Girl girl will carry on the torch.

Friends (and Enemies)

Here's a run down of the OTHER animals is our Sis's life. As if we weren't enough! Hrumph.

Kasey is an older female German Shepard that lives next door to our Grandparents. I played with her through the fence when I visited Grandma. We ran back and forth the backyards with each other. She is pretty nice.

Fi Fi is the cat of our Sis's boss (James) for her part-time job. Fi Fi likes to press her forehead against Sis's forehead and play with her little mouse toys. Grrr. Cats.

Here is a Rooster that lives in James's backyard (along with two hens)

Betty is a 13 year old female Border Collie (or was it Border Shepard, we forget?) who belongs to a painter friend of Sarah's, John Fleenor.

Our Weekend

Our Sis was home this weekend, it was so nice! We were so happy to see her. She played with us lots and took Akira on a looooong walk (she says Akira is getting out of shape without her there to take him on such loooong walks) and she carried me to look out windows and let me play in her bedroom for a while. I had a little pile of stuffed animals and various items that I liked that I wanted to keep, but she made me leave them in her room. She says I can come back up and play with them there. It was fun, I jumped on her bed, and I found lots of neat stuff, and I even tore a kleenex up in shreds (i didn't eat it or anything, though). Here are some pictures of us Sis took with her new cell phone.

Sunny Days...

Well, everydog, it sure was a sunny day today. It's a good thing I'm shedding up a storm since it's going to be warm out this week! I played around out in the backyard a lot. Who Does Depression Hurt?

...Everyone. :'(

Sis says maybe I am depressed. I say I don't know, I just don't have the energy to do much of anything lately. I lay around, especially in my old puppy crate, which Sis says is too small for me, but I say it's cozy and dark and safe. I have also been just standing around lately, not sure which way to go...too many decisions sometimes. I haven't even had much interest in eating, drinking, or going outside. Sis made me lick the water off her fingers cause I wouldn't take any from the bowl then...I did later, though. Then they practically dragged me out to the back yard, but they couldn't make me go very far. Sis asks me what's the matter, why I'm down in the dumps, but I don't really know. I heard her and Mom talking and they said they heard on the commercial for the flea medicine advatanx that it may cause depression and muscle aches-- have you pups heard anything about this? When I didn't have to take it over the winter I was a lot happier and more playful, I just started back on it and am do for another application soon-- has anyone heard of this causing depression and if I don't use that, has anyone heard of any herbal or natural remedies to keep the creepy-crawly-flying-biting-sucking-things away from me?

No, we are not pursuing an advanced degree, but our SIS is and her finals were H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks! We have not seen her in FOUR WEEKS!!! Trip to the v-e-t

We had to go to the v-e-t (shhhh don't scare anyone who can't spell it) two days ago. It was time for our annual hear worm test. They also tested us for the other worms by looking at our poo. First: Akira's old girlfriend, Sable. It would be one thing if Sis had brought us along to visit her, but no....Sable gets all the belly rubs!

Second: The Cat in Question (herewith referred to as TCQ) AKA Fi-Fi the Fierce. This is the cat who belongs to a sculptor Sis works for part time. I'm just hanging out underneath the table and chairs. The chair rungs are just the right height for me to rest my head on! Yes, those worn spots are spots I gnawed on when I was a puppy. I can't help the rungs are also just the right width to chew on like a bone, can I? Anyways, I don't do that anymore, that was just a puppy phase. I'm a big boy now. I will be five years old in April!

Sis came home this weekend and brought us new treats and a new toy! She says it is a Cuz. He can walk and jump and bounce and roll and squeak! He is lots of fun! Here are some pictures of us and our new Cuz!

Akira Rides to the Park

Today I got to go for a car ride. The ride to the kennel and the ride to one of the parks is exactly the same until you get to a certain stop light, then you turn left to the kennel or right to the park. So I was paying close attention until we made it past the light. Turns out we (Mom and me) were going to the park to walk with Mom's friend from work. Mom said she noticed my whole body tense up, then relax when the car turned right. I generally do not mind the kennel, but Shiro wasn't with me, and it is hard to sleep there with all the catching up we do with the other dogs. We tend to carry on all night over there. The park was a nice excursion today. And I always love a nice car ride (well, the 5 1/2 hr drive between Ohio and Maryland I used to go one was a little much). I don't know why Shiro gets so nervous riding in the car. He's ridden since he was a pup, but has never grown to like it any more. I find it exciting when we drive new places, and when we are at familiar areas, I am able to relax and let the car movement rock me to sleep. Speaking of sleep, it's almost midnight, so Shiro and I are going to call it a night. We are not sure what happened to the snow dog pictures...we found some more, but none as good as those. We'll look more though...
